SAN ANGELO — Spring is in the air and San Angelo is humming with food events benefiting many different community organizations.
“It’s what people do,” said Courtney Mahaffey, executive director of the San Angelo Symphony Society, who wrapped up the Culinary Challenge fundraiser earlier this month. “Food and drinks go with everything in your life.”
The West Texas Rehabilitation Center is getting ready to host the 35th annual Spring Chicken Affair — it coincides with the 35th anniversary of WTRC’s San Angelo location, by the way — on Sunday, April 23. Justin DeLoach, director of donor relations at WTRC, is amazed by how much the event has grown and continues to grow.
“It’s become one of the main spring events in San Angelo,” he said. “We have people calling in December wanting the date for the Spring Chicken Affair.”
I know my family always looks forward to the annual event. The food is finger lickin’ good — fresh fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, coleslaw. green beans. cookies and more. Plates are $8, diners can eat on site or take plates to go. Volunteers from the San Angelo Restaurant Association generally do the cooking and volunteers from the community help serve. They feed between 4,500 and 5,000 people each year.
WTRC also brings in a band for entertainment. This year’s featured band will be “Unnecessary Overtime,” a band made up of local TimeClock Plus employees. I had the pleasure of hearing them at a Chamber of Commerce event and their fun tunes got me chair dancing and toe tapping away.
“People do love to come out and eat, listen to some good music and then go home take a nap,” DeLoach said, adding that along the way attendees also end up helping the organization.
