To celebrate the launch of Friends becoming available on Internet streaming subscription service Stan, a real-life Central Perk cafe popped up in Sydney’s Hyde Park for two weeks.
From Monday October 5 to Sunday October 18, fans of the show had the opportunity to visit the Friends cafe replica and enjoy a free cup of coffee in Central Perk-branded paper cups.
Fans were also invited to take photos on the famous couch that made Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer household names.
As a huge fan of the show, I wanted in on the action and visited the cafe on Saturday. Here is my Friends experience:
I began documenting my wait at 1.14 pm when I posted this video to Vine:
Stan staff then told a couple people in front of me that it would be roughly an hour and a half to two hour wait. Oh, boy. What had I gotten myself into?
1.29 pm: I should have brought a friend.
1.30 pm: Hello, ibis, will you be my friend?
1.30.15, probably, pm: Oh, there’s two of you.
1.36 pm: I began scrolling through my Facebook friend list, performing a mini ‘friend clean’.
1.41 pm: I received a text from a friend about boy drama. As someone who has very minimal experience in the relationship sector, I began giving her relationship advice.
1.43 pm: OMG, getting closer.
1.48 pm: They say never look back. I looked back, and this is what I saw:
There’s no turning back now!
1.53 pm: This waiting game is really start to test a few relationships in line. New sitcom, anyone?
2.10 pm: OMG.
Pssh! 1.5 – 2 hours? Yeah, right.
2.14 pm: The final stretch.
2.21 pm: Is. this. real. life?
I loitered in the cafe for another fifteen minutes or so, snapping photos of every. little. thing. and taking in the Central Perk-y vibes. It was happening.
My “Friends experience” Vine:
Bye, bye, Central Perk. Until next time…
